Modem Carson
The Human Eye
by Steven Dickinson

When the Carsons returned home from their Grand Canyon trip there was a surprise package waiting for Modem. It was a reference book on the human anatomy. There were plenty of colorful pictures and full discriptions on each of the functions of the human body.

As Modem gets older this book would be one of the greatest influences in Modem becoming a doctor. But for now Modem is reading it for the first time.

"Hey Mom," Modem called, "did you know the ear has three bones in it?

Modem continued to learn about the ear. He reads about the Outer Ear which contains the ear flap and ear canal. The Middle Ear holds the ear drum and three tiny bones called hammer, anvil, and stirrup. In the Inner Ear is the...

"Modem, time to put down the book. We are going to the park, " Mom called from the kitchen.

"Ok, I'll find Sid."

Modem finds Sid and the three of them jump in the van. Mom took them to their favorite park, Jefferson Park. Jefferson Park is a park designed and paid for by a local millionaire. There is a green house and wild flower prairie. There is a pond in the shape of a large plus sign and filled with koi. In the middle of the pond is a ten foot high water fountain.

Surrounding the pond are decorative pathways with flower gardens on the outside of the pathways. North of the pond constructions workers were working on the buildings for a zoo that would open next year.

And of course the park had a play area. But first they had to watch the big trucks at the construction site. At this time they were pouring cement for the building that would house the lions and other wild cats.

After watching the workers for about ten minutes they decide to go play. The played on the slides, monkey bars, and swingsets.

Sid calls to Modem, "hey lets play on the teeter totter." They run to the teeter totter. Modem outruns Sid and takes his seat first. Sid wasn't looking where he was going and ran right into the end of the long board.

Modem's heart dropped as Sid released a loud cry. Mom was already running towards them since she saw it happen. The end of the board had hit Sid around his eye. He was bleeding.

Mom pulls out a hankerchief and places it on his wound. "Sid you need to hold this so you stop bleeding."

Sid held the hankerchief in place as he was instructed. They rushed to the van and headed straight for the emergency room. Modem sat in the back with his little brother to comfort him on the trip there.

That evening things calmed down. Sid was settled and almost proud of the shiner and stitches he received. Modem remembered what the doctor said about the accident. If he had hit any closer to the eye Sid would have been blind in that eye...for the rest of his life.

Modem pulled out his new book on the human body and went to the section that described the eye.

The eyeball is made up of a cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina and rods & cones. The whole eyeball is white except the cornea which is clear and bulges out the front of the eyeball.

To keep the eyeball clean humans have eyelids which sweep the eyeball clean and keep it moistened with tear fluid.

Modem continues to read on the basics of how the eye can see. Light passes through the cornea while the pupil opens and closes to allow the proper amount of light in. Without the pupil, which is inside the iris, a person could go blind because of too much light being allowed into the eyeball.

The lens, which is behind the iris, helps to focus the image on the retina. The cornea also works with the lens to focus the image.

The retina receives the focused light through rods & cones which turn the image into information and sends it to the brain through optic nerves.

Modem lays his book down. He thinks about Sid and what happened today. Modem prays, "Jesus, thanks for letting Sid keep his sight."
